Buoyed by the positive experiences of several acquaintances, I decided to explore whether my pain might be alleviated by channeling my chi. (Ok, full disclosure: I didn’t know exactly what “chi” was, but I was nonetheless willing to have mine professionally evaluated.)

Two weeks ago, Parker went home with a fever and a droopy eye, stumbling a bit. Two days later, his parents the truth: It was terminal cancer.

I certainly don’t claim to have all the answers. All I know for sure is that my boys have turned out so much better than I would have ever imagined when I stood so apprehensively in the Target aisle all those years ago. And it makes me humble, relieved, and incredibly grateful.
