Niv: An Econ Student Dreams of Cuba

Spotted on: The street near UC Berkeley
Occupation: Student of Economics and Public Policy

You are rocking your shorts today, where did this look come from?
The shorts are jeans from like, 8th or 9th grade. The tank is from Bangkok where my Mom and Sister live. The jacket is actually my dad’s—it's really old.”

Your hair wrap [ending in a lovely butterfly charm} is so beautiful. Where is it from?
A small town in the hills of India that we try to visit once a year. A man does the hair wraps out of his little shack. My friends tell me that I should cut it because it’s like, down to my vag, but I feel an emotional attachment to it.

Your mom and sister are in Bangkok? Is that where you’re from? How long have you been here?
I’m from Delhi, and I have been here about two years just to study.

Why Econ and Policy?
I was originally interested in Psych or Film or Anthropology but then I realized that if I wanted to have any kind of change or impact for any demographic in a tangible way, it needs to be from the perspective of understanding money because that’s what our world fucking runs on.

What are you reading right now?
I have been trying to read Matters of Life and Death for a few months. I keep checking it out of the library, but I just had to give up because I don’t have time to make it through.

What’s on repeat on your iPod?
I’m usually a Spotify kinda gal, listening to similar artists, but lately I have been listening to Abba! They’re fucking brilliant—like childhood memories—but also fucking brilliant.

Big thoughts?
Right now all I can think about is that I have two weeks of school left and I want to peace the fuck out. I want to go to Cuba with my dad, I have the money and it’s on my list and it’s on his list too, so I want it to be something that we do together.
