I think it’s safe to say that I’m coming to the end of my blond

I had to learn me because I was never given a chance to. People often act like this is easy or shouldn't be hard to grasp, but when you've literally spent your entire life not even knowing what your real hair feels like, it takes time to get used to that, especially when you have no one and nowhere to go to for solid advice.

My hair makes me happy and I dye it for my own enjoyment— not for yours. I mean, that’s cool if you happen to like it, too, but you don’t have to tell me about it. You can keep it to yourself, write it in your dream journal, take it to your grave. I don’t care what you do with it, I just know that I don’t need to know about it.

I love my hair curly and I love my hair straight. However, I would be misleading you if I didn't admit that people's positive reaction to my wild curly locks inspired me to keep my hair au naturel.

Being a Russian immigrant meant being showered with stereotypes, and my hair didn't fit anywhere. Russian girls had slick, straight strands. Other Jewish girls had heavy, dark waves.

Toss back half a bottle of merlot while watching “Daredevil.” Pause it for a pee break. Glance in bathroom mirror, notice bangs are getting slightly unruly.

Listen to your mother. I did. Briefly. She was adamant that it was wrong for a woman over 40 to wear a long hairstyle. I believed her. Then...not anymore. Not only am I over 40, my dark, curly hair is halfway down my back. Sorry, Mom. Rules are made to be broken.

Women who want to wear their hair natural must choose: protect your curls or protect your country. Because apparently, you can’t have it both ways.
