Amazing Map Reveals Favorite Musicians State by State

Do you ever wonder what all the guys and gals over in Utah are really shaking their rump to? Or what the outkasts in Alabama might be crooning away to in the shower? Or what the neo Club Kids are listening to in the beautiful basement-y bowels of New York City?

I know I do. As someone who's never gotten over 1960s Motown (seriously, check out my iTunes) I can be so out of the loop with new music. And whie I've always been an avid radio-head which reliably pumps out the Top 40 jams and the always-epic classic rock mega-hits ... I get curious about what everybody's ears are up to.

Happily Paul Lamere, founder of tech and music blog, Music Machinery has whipped up a fascinating map that shows every state's "distinctive" artists — the music each state listens to proportionally more than any other state in the U.S. — which not only reveals some obvious aural affinities by region, but also served as some wonderful fodder for my own personal playlists.

Lamere used data from his job at The Echo Nest, a "music intelligence platform" that synthesizes tons of data about all things music to help developers build killer apps to create this fascinating breakdown below. (But like really Virginia?! DMB...still?!)
