How You Can Get A Slurpee For Paying Your Taxes (Yes, Really)

Tax day is approaching — though not as fast as you'd think, since taxes aren’t due until April 18th this year. That's because Emancipation Day, a holiday that only exists for residents of Washington, DC will be observed on April 15th. It celebrates the anniversary of the day President Lincoln ended slavery in DC. So, it’s certainly a cool thing to observe — and it gives everyone a couple extra days to work on taxes.

But that’s not really the point here. The point is, the IRS has teamed up with 7-11 to make cash tax payments easier this year. That's right. You can pay your taxes and get a Slurpee and a hot dog, all in one convenient stop!

If you owe the feds a tax payment and don’t want to pay by check or e-transfer, you can make a cash payment in person at 7-11 stores. This is incredibly helpful for people who don’t have bank accounts or credit cards — or people who need to get taxes paid locally, at a spot near public transportation.

It won’t be as simple as walking in and handing a wad of cash over to the cashier. People wishing to pay cash should go to the payments page of the IRS.gov site and follow the instructions for making a payment. They will then get a confirmation code and email that they can take to one of 7,000 participating 7-11 locations nationwide. The stores will accept payments up to $1,000 plus a $3.99 processing fee.

The IRS suggests that folks get started early, since it’s a multi-step process. Happy taxes! (At least there's a Slurpee involved?)
